JAZZ @ Monti's Back Door on Monday Nights
07/30/2008 5:00pm Hi, JAMN Fans:
May 5 -- Cinco De Moio
Cinco De Moio is a Latin Jazz group made up of some of the premier players in the Phoenix area. The music ranges from Cuban: Danzon and Cha Cha to Brazilian Sambas and Bossa Novas. Dom Moio started the group in 2004 and the first gig was May 4, so the name was born and it stuck. Dom is on drums and percussion joined by Joe Garcia on Congas and percussion. Joe is probably the busiest percussionist in town due to his versatility and incredible stage presence. Jerry Donato plays tenor sax, soprano Sax, flute, and piccolo. Mike King is on bass. Brother Bill Moio is on guitar and also composes for the group. And the pianist, Ioannis Goudelis, is from Greece and also plays accordion.
May 12 -- Carmela y Mas
Carmela Y Mas is a kaleidoscope of Latin musical flavors. Latin Jazz and Salsa rhythms drive this electric band of award winning musicians. Audiences love their Merengue, Salsa, Cha Cha Cha and Rumbas as well as moving, soothing, Latin Jazz. Dedicated to music and live performance, "Carmela Y Mas" is an award winning ensemble. Carmela Ramirez, banleader and vocalist, has produced many performing ensembles throughout the last two decades. Her award winning bands have performed in the Valley of the Sun and the Southwest for hundreds of clubs, hotels, concerts, and festivals as well as featured entertainment for the "National Museum for Women in the Arts" in Washington D.C. and the "Himeji Castle 100th Year Celebration" in Himeji, Japan. New Times, Soundboard Magazine and Cambio Latin Magazine have honored Carmelas bands with outstanding awards for "Best Latin Jazz", Best Salsa Tropical",Best Fusion, Best Latin Vocalist, and several New Times Readers Choice awards.
May 19 -- Deater O'Neil and Mike Crotty
Chaunteuse Deater O'Neil and all-round jazzman Mike Crotty have been making music together for a lot of years. They have performed their jazz program with symphony orchestras around the world and continue to tour as ambassadors of jazz. After settling in Arizona six years ago, they formed a new quintet and went to work on the local scene. Crotty & O'Neil have performed at jazz venues throughout the Valley, including the Kerr Center, Sacred Grounds and the andler Jazz Festival. Deater's vocal styling and sultry delivery is worth the price of the ticket. Backing Mike and Deater are Nick Manson on keyboards, Tom Williams, bass and Dom Moio on drums.
